AbtractsSylvie Benzoni (Université de Lyon) A maths museum in a research centreFrom 2018 to 2024, as director of the Institut Henri Poincaré, I was responsible for bringing to life a mathematics museum within the institute, one that would showcase contemporary mathematics in all its immensity and vitality. Named the Maison Poincaré, the museum was inaugurated in September 2023. This was, quite literally, an extraordinary adventure. My aim here is to recount its ambitions, the challenges we faced, and the pitfalls encountered along the way. Ann Dooms (Vrije Universiteit Brussel) Mathematics Beyond the BlackboardThe popular narrative often casts mathematics as too abstract and technical for the broad public. Yet our discipline provides a rich source of stories that resonate far beyond the classroom or research community. Stories that should be told to help to understand the current digital age and shape its impact. In this lecture, I reflect upon my journey from the academic circle to the public square through columns, books, interviews and television programs that go beyond the blackboard to unlock the wonders of mathematics for all. Hugo Duminil-Copin (Université de Genève) What should I say?For the past three years, the speaker has been invited to engage with thousands of students, teachers, and math enthusiasts, as well as with policymakers at different levels. Each time, the same questions arise: What should be presented? How can we adapt to this new audience? How do we spark genuine involvement from the crowd (the crowd being potentially made of a single person)? These challenges are now part of the speaker’s daily experience - and it’s clear that traditional research training does little to prepare one for them. In this talk, we will share a few lessons learned along the way and invite the audience to reflect together on how best to approach these issues. Brady Haran (Numberphile) The Making of NumberphileBrady Haran is the producer of Numberphile, among other math and science channels on YouTube. His videos have been watched 1.4 billion times and have over 11 million subscribers. Brady travels the world interviewing experts and telling their stories. Today he will tell his own story. Mickaël Launay (Micmaths) An attempt to map mathematics I don't understandThe mathematics we don't understand are, of course, the most interesting ones. Those which attract us, intrigue us, and motivate us. Just as there are a thousand ways to understand, there are also a thousand ways to not understand. Each person has it's way of not understanding. And there's always room for reflection: sometimes, to better understand means realizing that, ultimately, we didn't understand as well as we thought we did. In this talk, I will attempt to sort out my own ways of living and dealing with what I don't understand. Juliette Nier (Freelance designer) Graphic Objects and Performed Stories: Collaborations between Researchers and Designers to Tell Science DifferentlyThrough live manipulation of objects and images, graphic designer Juliette Nier develops collaborations with researchers to present science to the general public in new ways. She will discuss several of these projects, highlighting the working methods, tools, and challenges involved in this type of collaboration. |
